Traditionally the Night of Athletics always boasts a strong field for the 1500m-race. That will be the case again on 22 July when Belgian record holder Ismael Debjani will take on a strong opposition in Heusden-Zolder.

Debjani ran 3:33.70 at the FBK Games in Hengelo, the first Belgian to dip below the 3:34 barrier. He broke the 20-year old Belgian record held by Christophe Impens in the process. Debjani also qualified for the world championship in Londen later this summer and set Europe's season-best time.

Fellow Belgians Peter Callahan and Isaac Kimeli would like to emulate Debjani and qualify for London by going below the 3:36 maximum limit. Belgian-American Callahan was the only Belgian to win his individual race at the EuropaCup in Finland. Bashir Abdi will also make a foray on the 1500m instead of his more familiar 5000m.

Foreign competition

The Belgians will have to face fierce opposition from abroad. Morocco's Fouad El Kaam, the winner of 2015, will appear at the start alongside the fast American duo Ryan Hill and Eric Jenkins, the second and third-placed finishers of the past American trials.
