About one week after have set a new European record of 10.73 during the European Championships in Budapest, Christine Arron faced Marion Jones for a duel on 100m. The French star was no real threat for Jones, as the American sprinted away in 10.80 vs. 10.95.

In a renewed King Baudouin stadium 47.000 spectators (full house) also saw Michael Johnson set a new meeting record on the 400m. He dominated the field in 44.06 despite the rather cold conditions for august.

Haile Gebrselassie also complained about the temperature after missing his attempt to approach Komen's world record on 3.000m. The Ethiopian became the n 2 in history anyway with 7.25.09.

Another meeting record fell in the 400m hurdles thanks to the Moroccan Nezha Bidouane, who ran 53.43. In the pole vault Jeff Hartwig equalled the meeting record of Sergey Bubka by clearing 5,95m.

In addition to Jones and Gebrselassie, Bryan Bronson and Hicham El Guerrouj stayed in contention for the jackpot of the Golden League. El Guerrouj easily won the 1.500m in 3.29.67. Other highlights were the long distance events. In the 5.000m Mezegebu (12.53.84) beat Daniel Komen (12.54.82) and in the 10.000m Paul Tergat (26.46.44) and Paul Koech (26.47.89) produced the n 7and 8 times in history.

On the 100m hurdles the Nigerian Glory Alozie equalled her national record and the world leading performance. On 400m her compatriot Fali Ogunkoya ran a stunning 49.60, while the American Inger Miller set a personal best of 22.20 on 200m.
