After three physical and one virtual edition due to COVID-19, the long-awaited fifth edition of the Athora Great Bruges Marathon will take place on Sunday 17th October. In this marathon with a culinary flair, you run through the historic city centre of Bruges, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and along a few picturesque polder villages. The date for this fifth anniversary had already been announced and you can sign up from now on!
"We are eagerly awaiting welcoming our participants again at the start of a real, live event after a one-year interruption", says Greg Broekmans of organiser Golazo. "We have missed our community of runners and walkers terribly. But the reverse is also true: the demand for participation in physical events is sky-high. People feel the need for a concrete training goal over a longer period. The recently announced easing and the perspective that offers is clearly infectious."
The Athora Great Bruges Marathon has made the conscious choice to remain loyal to its formula for success of the previous years. 100% of the course is on Bruges' territory. The start of the marathon is in the historic centre by the Dijver. Participants will first run in a northerly direction to the coast of Zeebrugge and will then return to finish in the shadow of the Belfry on the Grote Markt. Stretches through picturesque villages like Lissewege, Koolkerke, Dudzele and Zwankendamme will allow participants plenty of opportunity to familiarise themselves with everything that Bruges has to offer.
The runners and walkers of the half marathon and participants in the Family Walk of 8 km start and finish in this unique historic setting. As usual, participants will be treated to culinary delights along the route and at the finish thereby doing justice to the outspoken gourmand character of Bruges.
"We are the title sponsor of the Athora Great Bruges Marathon again this year", says Dorsan van Hecke, CEO Athora Belgium. "This will be the sports event of hope. So, it's time to start training and exercising to shed any lockdown weight gain. Athora's employees and our brokers will be there."
"It is funny that this is only the fifth edition because it feels like the marathon has always been inextricably linked with the city of Bruges", adds Councillor for Sport Franky Demon who is over the moon with the comeback. "What's more, the many different formulas allow everybody to (re)discover Bruges in their own way and at their own pace. That is the vision that we in Bruges are trying to promote as a city of sport: all people from Bruges have to be able to practise their (favourite) sport."
