Wellens: 'Didn't even know I would start'
Tim Wellens is the first Belgian who wins Eneco Tour. Still, for a while it had not been clear whether or not the young Belgian from team Lotto-Belisol would start at all. "I've been ill", said the winner of the final overall ranking.
The final overall victory of Wellens was never in real danger in the concluding stage. The young leader responded well on each jump by riders such as Boom and Van Avermaet. Logically, he was over the moon. "This is a marvellous victory."

"And yet, I wasn't sure whether I would take part in the Eneco Tour as I had been ill", Wellens explained. "The team has done a great job supporting me today and kept me out of the wind all day."

Belgium is expecting a lot from the 23-year-old rider and even believes he is future Grand Tour material. "You cannot compare this stage race with one that lasts three weeks", he knows. "I have difficulty in keeping up in the mountains. A stage race of about a week is ideal for me."

Wellens hopes the expectations won't be too high. "I hope I can meet the expectation, but I still have a lot of work ahead", Wellens remained calm. The rider from Lotto-Belisol has extendid his portfolio already. "Winning the Eneco Tour has proven difficult enough already!"
