Mathieu van der Poel will work his way through a reduced cyclo-cross programme this coming winter, nevertheless, the Cyclo-Cross World Champion has announced that he will definitely appear at the start in Namur!
Last year, Mathieu van der Poel won the World Cup race in Namur after an heroic competition on a super heavy muddy course. On Sunday 20th December 2020, the Dutchman will make an appearance again at the Citadel.
On Thursday, Van der Poel announced the six cyclo-cross races that he will definitely take part in this coming winter.
To start, there's the Scheldecross in Antwerp (12/12), Azencross in Loenhout (29/12), GP Sven Nys in Baal (1/1) and Flandriencross in Hamme (23/01). All four of those cyclo-cross races are part of the Belgian cyclo-cross racing series Trophy. VdP will also participate in the Ethias Cross in Bredene (30/12).
Organiser Christophe Impens (Golazo) is very pleased with the World Champion's plans: "Mathieu only rides cyclo-cross for two months, so, we are very happy that we will get to see him at the start of six of our cyclo-cross races. Even if we have to organise all cyclo-cross races behind closed doors ? and that currently looks very likely unfortunately - Mathieu's presence gives the spectacle a serious added value, in this case for the viewers at home."
Mathieu van der Poel is already looking forward to cyclo-cross: "Firstly, I am happy that these competitions are continuing despite the current situation. My cyclo-cross season is now also beginning to take shape. I want to ride as many cyclo-cross races as possible during the months of December and January. These are six nice cyclo-cross competitions, each of them permanent fixtures on the calendar, which have always provided fireworks in the past. Obviously, these won't be the only six, extra races will be revealed soon. In any event, I am looking forward to giving it my all again this winter."
