Mathieu van der Poel has won the Telenet UCI World Cup round in Namur, which forms part of the Soudal Classics. He beat his nearest competitor Wout Van Aert by half a minute.
Laurens Sweeck took the best start and kept the pace high in the early stages. Wout Van Aert accidentally clicked out of his pedal and had to start chasing. On the infamous slanted side Mathieu van der Poel impressively took the lead from Toon Aerts. In the background world champion Van Aert overtook one rider after the other.
He also grabbed Aerts, who crashed on the slanted section one lap later. European champions Van Der Poel was long gone however, and took his 17th season win with over a minute ahead of Van Aert. Aerts was third a further 50 seconds behind, followed by a strong Joris Nieuwenhuis. Michael Vanthourenhout rounded out the top-five.
In the standings Aerts remains in the lead, but Van Aert and Van der Poel are closing the gap. The next round of the World Cup takes place in Heusden-Zolder.
