On 10 September a brand-new running event will take place in Ixelles! Around 3,000 runners are expected at the start of the inaugural XL 10 Miles. Registrations will open on Tuesday 11 July at 11:00.
The date, 10 September, was not picked randomly. The event takes place exactly three weeks before the Brussels Marathon & Half Marathon. As such it is the ideal preparation for that popular event in the Belgian capital.
This new running event is organised by Golazo at the request of Ixelles sports councillor Bea Diallo, supported by mayor Dominique Dufourny and the council of the Ixelles municipality.
The XL 10 Miles, or 16 kilometres, is a race for everyone. Both regular runners and beginners are invited to complete one or two five-mile or eight kilometre laps around the most important and beautiful spots in Ixelles.
"Ixelles is the home of over 85,000 inhabitants. As such it is a suitable location for a running event with distances for everyone," says Golazo sports representative Greg Broekmans. "Ixelles is very diverse and one of the most beautiful areas in the Brussels Capital Region. That translates into a fantastic looking course. We are delighted to be able to add the XL 10 Miles to our wide portfolio of running events."
The start and finish location will be announced later on. The course will offer a variety of locales including Flagey, the town hall, the ponds at the Ixelles Museum, the European Parliament, the Matonge quarter, Ter Kameren Abbey and the Luxembourg Square.
"Jogging events are very popular and they have an important function, because they attract a diverse public," adds Bea Diallo, sports councillor of Ixelles. "The multicultural community of Ixelles is one of the most important communities in Brussels, but until now they haven't been able to enjoy a major running event. That will change very soon."
In addition to the XL 10 Miles, which will donate a part of the proceedings to charity, there will also be a fun one-mile run for children. Between the Kids Mile, the XL 5 Miles and the XL 10 Miles there's a challenge for everyone in Ixelles!
