The homecountry Italy has proven to be the Granfondo country with a total of 20 medals during the 2018 UCI Gran Fondo World Championships. The big majority of these medals have been won in the Granfondo on Sunday.
Italy scored a total of 8 gold medals (1 time trial, 7 granfondo), 6 silver and 6 bronze medals.
The only time trial gold for Italy on Thursday was for Olga Cappiello (F55-59) who made the double as she also won the World title in the Granfondo. Other Italian World Champions are Tommaso Elettrico (M19-34), Alfonso D'Errico (M40-44), Marco Previde Massara (M60-64), Jessica Leonardi (F19-34), Barbara Billi (F40-44) and Maria Cristina Prati (F50-54) .
Second country in this prestigious ranking is France, the winner of the medals standings of last year. France won 3 gold, 4 silver and 6 bronze. Belgium finally took third spot with 3 gold, 4 silver and 2 bronze before Slovenia, Australia and Germany.
Remarkable is that although there were a record number of 61 different nationalities at the start, the medals have been won by only 19 different nations, the lowest number since 2012.
The record of total medals is still owned by Australia in Perth 2016 with a total of 43 medals from which 13 gold. France is still recordholder for a World Championships in Europe with more nations at the start. They won 30 medals last year in Albi from which 10 gold.
