Amy's Granfondo has claimed the second weekend of September as a fixed stopover in the UCI Gran Fondo World Series with a weekend filled with a criterium, hill climb, family rides, a medio fondo, elite racing and last but not least the Granfondo.
The opening event of the 2017 qualifying season scored again a new participants' record with 5500 starters in its sixth edition on a course that was done for the first time in the opposite order, finishing in the center of Lorne.
Twenty-one-year-old Lionel Mawditt took the men's overall finishing time of 3:03.01. The Victorian native came in only two seconds ahead of second place.
"The course was brutal, but beautiful as well. Great racing, great scenery, of course," Mawditt said.
In the women's event New Zealander Bronwyn Macgregor took home the overall female in a time of 3:20.52.
Over 33% of participants come from interstate, emphasising the allure of the Great Ocean Road as a cycle-tourism destination.
