Under a beautiful summer sun, the first edition of the Great Breweries Marathon explored the gorgeous area around the Duvel Moortgat brewery in Puurs.
With 5.500 participants, 3.500 runners and 2.000 walking, the event was completely sold out. Around 4.000 people chose the 25 km distance, 1.500 people went for the full marathon. The atmosphere was great as participants discovered the beautiful course in the Dender region, the Pajottenland and Klein-Brabant. With Puurs, Londerzeel, Merchtem, Opwijk, Buggenhout and Sint-Amands the course ran through six towns in three provinces: Antwerpen, Vlaams-Brabant and Oost-Vlaanderen.
Duvel Moortgat CEO Michel Moortgat took part in the 25 km event. He was joined by no less than 41 nationalities, including participants from the US and Japan. The oldest runner, 79, took part in the 25 km.
Afterwards the participants enjoyed a well-deserved beer from the famous, Belgian Great Breweries: Duvel Moortgat, PALM Belgian Craft Brewers and Bosteels Brewery. They also received a pack of beers to take home.
The 25 km race was won by Willem Van Schuerbeeck. Stan De Vleminck won the marathon in 2:36:19. The women's marathon was won by Juliet Champion in 3:01:12, while Carine Van Hooydonck came out on top in the 25 km.
