Bolsward, with her wonderful historic centre and many museums, is one of Friesland's most beautiful cities. It is a cosy city where history and architecture play a key role. Every year the residents strongly hope for a harsh winter, so the Elfstedentocht (Eleven cities skating tour) can be organised. Bolsward is one of those eleven cities. Sports are important for the city, which has a very modern sports complex and is the starting point for the Eleven cities bicycle tour.
In the city centre you will find many monumental buildings. One of these is the Town Hall from 1615, which is richly decorated. The Town Hall also includes an Antiquities Room, where you can see objects which tell you about the history of Bolsward. Handicrafts made by silver workers, old coins and 18th century pottery.
In the past Bolsward was the city of monasteries and churches. The oldest church is the Broere Church, which regrettably was destroyed in a fire in 1980. You can visit the remains of this church. The Martini Church is without doubt the most impressive building. Especially the elegant pulpit and the Choir banks with fine woodcarving are worth a visit.
Bolsward has two famous museums. The Titus Brandsma museum, where you can find objects, letters, postcards, books, articles, photographs and paintings of this carmelite Father, Frisian academic and publicist. And the Gysbert Japicxhûs House. The birth House of this Frisian poet tells the visitors about the life story of this remarkable man.
