The Eneco Tour has announced three wildcard teams. Dutch Team Roompot and Belgian outfits Topsport Vlaanderen-Baloise and Wanty-Groupe Gobert are invited to join the UCI WorldTour teams from 10 till 16 August.
The Eneco Tour starts on Monday 10 August with a stage in and around the Frisian city of Bolsward and ends on Sunday 16 August in the Flemish Ardennes in Geraardsbergen. In addition to the 17 WorldTour teams, the organisers invited three teams with a wildcard. Those teams already confirmed several riders for the race.
Team Roompot counts on the attacks of Johnny Hoogerland as well as promising youngster Dylan Groenewegen. The 22-year-old from Amsterdam won the Tour of Flanders for U23 riders and had a good first season for Roompot with a fifth place in the Handzame Classic and a fourth place in the Dutch road championships last month.
Topsport Vlaanderen-Baloise will bring its new Belgian champion Preben Van Hecke. After going for gold in Belgium, Van Hecke also got married. He will be extremely motivated to show of the Belgian tricolor jersey all the way from Friesland to his Flemish Ardennes.
Wanty-Groupe Gobert will bring a lot of experience to the Eneco Tour. The 38-year-old veteran Björn Leukemans won the Tour of Limburg last month and was a sure top-ten pick for the Flemish spring classics for many years. He will be joined by 31-year-old Marco Marcato and 33-year-old Enrico Gasparotto, two experienced Italians. Gasparotto won the 2012 Amstel Gold Race.
The Eneco Tour is the UCI WorldTour's only multi-stage race in the Netherlands and Belgium. It's the world's only climate-neutral cycling race.
