The city of Antwerp is gearing up for the 34th edition of the AG Antwerp 10 Miles & Marathon. Over 35,000 runners have already signed up.

Mayor Bart De Wever explains the reasons behind the event's continued success: "The sport of running keeps on growing. The economic, sportive and promotional returns of the AG Antwerp 10 Miles & Marathon are a massive benefit to our city. Of course there's also a positive impact on the community, because sports events like these bring people together."

Much like previous editions the 10 Miles will be the most popular distance on offer. Over two-thirds of all participants will tackle sixteen kilometres. Over 3,000 runners are taking on the full marathon, with also a 5km short run and a 1.4km kids run on offer.

"These sports events are further enhancing our profile of Flanders' international sports city," Antwerp sports councillor Ludo van Campenhout adds. "The 10 Miles and Marathon grew into the biggest and most successful running event in our country. With Sporting A we will keep investing in these participation events. They are some of the most powerful tools to encourage more people to run and exercise. These initiatives, with a record number of spectators and participants in particular, are reinforcing the Olympic tradition of our city.

New course for 10 Miles

"The most important novelties are situated on the course of the 10 Miles," says organiser Golazo's Greg Broekmans. "This year runners on the 10 Miles will get to enjoy a new course. There's a re-designed passage through Het Zuid and in the city centre they will cross the student neighbourhood. Both passages should enhance the atmosphere even more."

There will also be an extra supply post for the AG Antwerp 10 Miles. In addition to the three existing posts and a supply point at the end there will be a fourth post after roughly 2,5 km.

The organisers are also stressing the importance of a proper preparation for the 28 April event, offering all participants free, personalised training programmes put together by Energy Lab. In co-operation with partners Sportoase and Runners'Lab they also organised regular training runs in the Antwerp area.

Move by AG

"Last year, conscious of our role in society, we organised the activation programme Move by AG," said AG Insurance CEO Hans De Cuyper. "It's a programme which encourages as many people as possible to exercise and actively work on their health, of course at their own pace. With 40,000 participants and tens of thousands of supporters on the side of the road, the AG Antwerp 10 Miles & Marathon is an ideal platform to spread that message. That's why we are proud to once again support one of the largest mass sports events in Flanders and Belgium."

Emphasis on experience

The organisers and their partners are going the extra mile to keep the participants' morale high during the run. With over 40 animations on the various courses and a series of innovative activations, Sunday is shaping up to be a brilliant day for participants, supporters and the citizens of Antwerp.

Shakeout Run on Saturday

The event will expand to Saturday for the first time with the first support event. At 11:30 Antwerp Running Crew is inviting everyone for the free AG Antwerp 10 Miles & Marathon Shakeout Run. Rendez-vous at 11:30 at the pedestrian tunnel (Linkeroever) for a fun and leisurely 5km run through Linkeroever. It's the perfect opportunity for participants to give their legs one last warm-up ahead of Sunday's big event.
